Clever ways to improve storage in your home
Whatever the size of your home, storage is always something we can improve. Often we’re not using all of the available space efficiently.
An organised home is scientifically proven to make happier people. Decluttering expert Marie Kondo, says ‘life really begins after you have put your house in order’. She emphasises the importance of order and beauty of your living space and its impact on your emotional wellbeing.
As we’ve seen with so many of our clients and with more of us working from home, the popularity in DIY and practical home storage projects is booming right now.
There are many simple cost-effective ways you can create storage solutions in your home and we’ve outlined our favourites:
- Make the most of the walls
Make the most of every last bit of space in your home. Look at the walls to see where you could build floor-to-ceiling shelving and cupboards. For example, a cleverly designed unit could hide unsightly TV and cables. Use the entire breadth of the wall to create large amounts of space.
This type of shelving is an ideal solution if you have lots of books and DVDs. Try organising them by colour to create a designer look.
You can also install shelves along the perimeter of your bedroom walls, which will add dozens of square feet of storage space.
And don’t discount the space around the doors. You can add shelves that don’t take up extra floor space yet provide extra room for all your nicknacks.
2. Re-locate larger utilities
Do you have a water tank or boiler taking up a lot of room in your bedroom or kitchen? Why not, consider moving these to your roof. This could free up a lot of much-needed space. Always use an expert and seek advice with moving any water tanks or boilers as you’ll need to consider several things including water pressure.
3. Create in-built storage
A great place to add storage is in a bay window, alcove or under windows. These awkward spaces can be revamped by installing a seating area that doubles up as a storage unit and creates a new cosy space. Perfect for children’s toys, blankets or just tidying away odds and ends.
4. Have storage built under your stairs
This is a clever use of empty space. We’ve built hundreds of impactful utility rooms and bathrooms in incredibly small spaces under the stairs. You can even install drawers in the actual stair rungs for shoes or bottles of wine.
With the right space-saving furniture and clever use of tiles and accessories, you can create some amazing rooms that are truly functional but also have the wow factor.
5. Build a porch
Adding a porch can add space and gravitas to your home, You can create a prestige entrance with organised, hidden storage for shoes and coats. Not only would it improve the aesthetic of the entranceway to your home and add more storage, but it will also improve insulation and keep you and your family warmer in the winter. As an added bonus you won’t be walking any dirt into the main part of your house and it will change the whole flow of your house giving it a bigger airier feel.
Tidy house, tidy mind
These are just a few of our favourite ways that can create most space in your home and will dramatically change the use of that space. Are you interested in learning more about how you can improve your home office space? Then be inspired with our home office on a budget ideas.
